# Using the explorer

Areas, domain, codes, granularity, period, ownership and vintage, set once in the bar; the table, the charts and the map all read from the same selection.

## The short answer

The selection bar is sticky and every pill opens a picker in place: areas, domain (Industry or Occupation), codes, granularity, period, ownership and vintage. The table shows one row per series: one area, one code, one ownership setting. Columns can be added or removed from the column menu, including the provenance columns, and **Reset to defaults** restores the starting set. Click a row or its code for its details: where its values came from, its reliability score where there is one, and its quarterly breakdown.

## The detail

Levels are named from the classification itself: Total, Domain, Super-sector, Sector, then 3-digit to 6-digit for industries; Total, Major, Minor, Broad and Detailed for occupations. Choosing All shows the whole hierarchy nested, with the level named on each row, and never sums a parent with its children. A custom list can be saved as a code cluster; a list that contains both a code and one of its descendants is refused, because it would count the same employment twice.

The default industry table shows employment, establishments, change, average pay and location quotient; the occupation table shows employment, change, average pay and location quotient. Ownership is federal, state, local and private; the default sums all four, and any subset ticked is summed the same way. Employment estimates that round below one display as 0; the row details show the stored value, which is what an export carries. Rows are capped at three hundred on screen with a control to show all. A county outside your plan is never hidden; it is greyed, with the reason.

Occupation values carry no value-level provenance, so an occupation table has no published or estimated marks; see [occupation values](/docs/data/occupation-values).
